When we're stressed, it can be easy to quickly become overwhelmed with the uncomfortableness and the dire need to get rid of it. Who wouldn't? Although not all stress is "bad stress", chronic stress is. Chronic stress can lead to heart disease, high blood pressure, depression, and many other illnesses. It would be ideal to be able to leave any stressful situation and no longer have to worry about it...but that's not always realistic. We carry stress from our jobs, our money flow, school, raising our kids, stressful relationships with our family, friends, romantic partners, coworkers, etc. It's hardly ever easy to get rid of stress in those areas, and every decision comes with its consequence.
Even though this isn't a "cure" to all stress, deep breathing can be a quick way to calm yourself in the moment. Deep breathing can benefit your heart, brain, digestive system, and immune system. If you ever find yourself in a situation where you need fast relief from your stress, simply take a deep breath in....hold it for a few seconds...then exhale and repeat as necessary. Don't wait to exhale like I used to.
What are your experiences with deep breathing? Do you find it to be helpful when you are stressed out? We'd love to hear about your experiences in the comments down below!
